Unitarianism in America A History of its Origin and Development George Willis Cooke 9781495451447 Books

This book was written over a century ago, yet is very readable. It begins at the beginning of Unitarianism in this country, from when it was little more than a difference of thought about the doctrines taught in the orthodox churches of the colonies and continues up to the beginning of the twentieth century. Some of the names mentioned will be familiar to anyone who has had early American lit and history as courses in high school: Louisa May Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathan Hale, Thomas Paine, and others, as well as some that were important to the Unitarian movement, i.e., W. E. Channing, Andrews Norton, Jared Sparks, and Theodore Parker, that you may not be as familiar with.

If you really want to understand the current debate about the separation of church and state, and think it's only goes back to the sixties when prayer was removed from school, then this is an excellent place to start. This is an issue Americans have been discussing with varying amounts of rancor since we were only colonies.
